Myers analyzes post-Reformation theological trends and their influence on Milton's poetry, particularly Paradise Lost. Acknowledging that Milton's work invites historical explication and yet refuses to be explained away by an historical determinant, Myers analyzes how Milton transmuted whole traditions of literature, linguistics and theology and transcended even the epic tradition as he describes what exactly constituted heresy and orthodoxy in Milton's experience, who contributed to the "theology of freedom" Milton appropriates, including Augustine, Aquinus, Luther, and Calvin, how Satan figured in freedom, how Milton presented predestination and the concept of a free creator, and how Milton described human freedom, the Fall, grace, and conversion. Particularly interesting is Myer's reactions to De Doctrina Christiana, his commentary on reformed orthodoxy, and the issue of universal grace. The indices include a very helpful reference guide to Paradise Lost. Annotation c2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
