APA Handbook of Nonverbal Communication

Organized around four broad themes--overview and history; factors of influence; sources of messages; methodology--this handbook targets researchers. Citing the many ways of understanding and classifying the various functions of nonverbal communication (NVC), it describes four ways: NVC can define communication; it can comment on verbal communication; it can regulate interaction episodes; and it can be the message itself. Nonverbal communication is comprised of multiple sources of messages, broadly arranged into three categories: environment or context; physical characteristics or appearance; dynamic actions of the face, voice, and body.
