Picking up the Flute is a memoir framed by my experience of learning to play traditional Irish music on the wooden flute. It offers both a beginner's account of exploration and discovery and a retiree's reflections on life's wholeness. A particular Irish tune (as played by me) serves as the leitmotif for each chapter. My decision to publish this project in the form of an audiobook, as well as links to my website for the MP-3 downloads, was inspired by a desire to give readers of the book a chance to hear this sequence of tunes in their immediate contexts along the way. Once having set up my website, I also realized that it offered an opportunity to approach the project as a more thoroughgoing multimedia narrative.
I am no digital native. But just as launching into the Irish flute has catalyzed a new way of understanding what retirement might mean, so too does the occasion for experimenting with digital publication and social networks challenge and exhilarate me. The book will be out as an audioboook, too.
