Heathens, Pagans, Misbelievers ― A Lexico-semantic Field Study and Its Historio-pragmatic Reflections in Texts from the English Middle Ages

Kirner-Ludwig identifies selected lexemes relating to religion occurring in Anglo-Latin, Old English, and Middle English text samples ranging from about 600 to about 1500-50, applies characteristics to them using the Oxford English Dictionary and the Middle English Dictionary, establishes as best she can when they were borrowed from Latin or French and incorporated into English vocabulary, and tracks the development of their usage and semantic contents. She covers objects of investigation, research to date, and preliminary considerations; techniques of approach; heathens, pagans, misbelievers--core lexemes within the lexico-semantic field of the misbeliever; and misbeliers in context--a historio-pragmatic approach to "pagan" terminology.
