Sneed B. Collard III graduated with honors in marine biology from U.C. Berkeley and earned a masters degree in scientific instrumentation from U.C. Santa Barbara. Since beginning his writing career, he has written more than seventy award-winning nonfiction and fiction books for young people including Animal Dads, The Prairie Builders, Teeth, Pocket Babies, and Fire Birds—Valuing Natural Wildfires and Burned Forests. He is also the author of seven acclaimed novels including Double Eagle, the Slate Stephens Mysteries series, and the tween time-travel thriller Dog 4491. In 2006, Sneed was honored with the Washington Post–Children’s Book Guild Award for Nonfiction. His books continue to be regular features on “best of” lists and are particularly sought-after for Common Core studies and reluctant readers.
