Agency is the pivot, says Nevitt (Renaissance literature, U. of Sheffield) in his study of how groups of non-aristocratic women responded to an assortment of assumptions about--and interdictions or prohibitions against--female participation in the pamphlet culture of revolutionary England. He argues that the rhetoric of inclusivity and democratization that has characterized most writing about the pamphlet conceals the material and rhetorical barriers that women encountered when participating in revolutionary pamphlet culture, and that the disciplinary divides behind modern studies of mid-17th-century British women's writing have tended to produce distorted views of female agency.
