A History of Golf in Georgia

Golf first came to Georgia in the late eighteenth century when a group of avid golfers banded together to form a club in Savannah. By the end of the nineteenth century, when the game had become popular, the state developed courses from border to border. More than four hundred courses now dot the landscape of the Peach State. Georgia native and golfing icon Bobby Jones won four of golf's most coveted titles in 1930: the British Amateur, British Open, U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur.
