While Thalmann and her brother survived their death-defying brush with Hitler's Third Reich by gaining safe haven in Switzerland, most of her family was lost to the Holocaust. Drawing on archives, newspapers of the time, letters, and some photographs, her narrative follows a chronological order as she recounts the short but determining period of her life, which was marked by two significant turning points: 1933, with the eruption of Nazism, and 1954, when she entered public service, eventually achieving emeritus status at the University Paris VII-Denis Diderot.
