Process Implementation Through 5S ─ Laying the Foundation for Lean

Most 5S activities are conducted quickly with no employee involvement other than the implementation. What is needed for successful 5S is proper implementation with employee engagement as well as effective sustainment systems. Management must follow a standard to manage Plan Do Check Act (PDCA). Following PDCA, this book outlines how to: Plan the 5s activity, Do the 5s initiative, and Check daily if the original Plan is sufficient. During the Check phase, you determine whether you should continue following the original Plan, or if not, Act in changing the plan, and repeat the PDCA cyle. This book shows how to attain an stability for a proper Lean Foundation (with 5S through standard work).

Drew Willis learned Lean through extensive classroom training and hands on experience as a production team member at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky. During his tenure at Toyota, he successfully implemented improvements that drastically reduced defects on multiple processes. Since Toyota, he has held numerous positions including having responsibility for implementation of 5S and standardized work, program management, and government relations and contracting. Drew currently works in food manufacturing and has primary P&L responsibility for military business, working with internal and external customers to increase the bottom line. Drew also holds a law degree, and has published articles in the area of labor law.
