In exploring the early representation of Muhammad from the perspective of quranic intertextuality, Segovia is not trying to reconstruct the historical Muhammed, but to understand how his image was fabricated and how it eventually matched that of other prophets and/or charismatic figures distinctive to the sectarian milieu out of which Islam arose. He begins with a critical analysis of what the Qur'an says explicitly and implicitly, about the anonymous prophet often alluded to in its pages in the second person plural, and about one of his most salient though heretofore neglected intertextual models: Noah.
