Some of the material here has been previously published in other languages. Part one looks at cryptic texts from the Talmud and how they have been interpreted. Part two looks at how ancient Jewish thought reflects Roman religion. Part three looks at performing the craft and science of magic, as represented in rabbinic texts (Toaff's Blood Passover is considered here as a lesson in the dangers of misunderstanding abstruse texts). Part four reflects on languages and texts. The last section looks at the Song of Songs. The book is designed for scholars of rabbinic Judaism.
