This biography investigates the life and legacy of James Jesse Strang, an early Mormon leader who was close to Mormon founder Joseph Smith in the middle of the 19th century. Strang is notable for his break with other Mormon leaders when he tried to become Smith's successor after Smith was killed. The book describes how Strang was excommunicated from the Mormon Church in 1850, how he took his group of followers to an isolated island in Lake Michigan, and how he was later assassinated in 1866.
