商品簡介

This book demystifies the models we use to simulate present and future climates, allowing readers to better understand how to use climate model results. In order to predict the future trajectory of the Earth’s climate, climate-system simulation models are necessary. When and how do we trust climate model predictions? The book offers a framework for answering this question. It provides readers with a basic primer on climate and climate change, and offers non-technical explanations for how climate models are constructed, why they are uncertain, and what level of confidence we should place in them. It presents current results and the key uncertainties concerning them. Uncertainty is not a weakness but understanding uncertainty is a strength and a key part of using any model, including climate models. Case studies of how climate model output has been used and how it might be used in the future are provided. The ultimate goal of this book is to promote a better understanding of the structure and uncertainties of climate models among users, including scientists, engineers and policymakers.

作者簡介

Dr. Andrew Gettelman, PhD, is a research scientist in the Climate and Global Dynamics Division at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), in Boulder, Colorado, USA. NCAR is a not-for-profit research lab funded by the National Science Foundation. Dr. Gettelman performs dedicated research developing atmospheric climate models. He also lectures on climate issues to undergraduates and graduate students. Dr Gettelman is involved in leading several different international projects on chemistry and climate modeling, and has been a contributing author to the modeling chapters of the World Meteorological Organization assessments of Ozone Depletion and a lead author of reports assessing Chemistry-Climate Models

Prof. Richard B. Rood is a professor of atmospheric and Space Sciences at the University of Michigan. He is former director of what is now the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Prof. Rood is an expert in atmospheric modeling, data assimilation, chemical modeling. His current research interests are on the use of information from climate projections in adaptation to global warming and bridging the study of weather and climate. Prof. Rood also writes a climate blog for the Weather Underground

Prof. Retto Knutti has a PhD from the University of Bern, Switzerland. Prof. Knutti is a professor in the Institute for Atmosphere and Climate Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule , ETH) in Zurich Switzerland. Prof. Knutti is a coordinating lead author for the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He and his group are users of multiple climate model output. His research interests include, simulation of scenarios for future climate change, the quantification of uncertainties in the climate response, and the development of methods to constrain important feedback processes in the climate system by comparing observations with model results.
