Researched from diverse and extensive source material s (including directories, city archives, fieldnotes, postcards etc), Unseen Siam reveals the careers of 15 photographers (some well known, others less so), who worked in Siam, many becoming court photographer to the then monarch King Chulalongkorn. Their work was not restricted to photographic cartes-de-visites, as was often teh case, but also included large images from attributable albums and portfolios. Each reproduced image is fully catalogued and in many cases identifies the name of teh photographer behind many well known images for teh first time.

Priv.-Doz. Dr. Joachim K. Bautze, art-historian, has taught at the universities of Heidelberg, Tokyo and Berlin. He has guest-curated exhibitions of Indian art in Europe and the U.S.A. He has written, contributed to, or edited, a number of books, catalogs and articles on South- as well as South-East Asian art and photography.
