The aim of this second edition is to bring back into print the 1995 first edition of volume 1, and to publish volume 2 (2008) as part of this paperbound set so that the whole work is available and affordable. This set comprises three volumes, because, as stated in the preface, the second volume was reformatted "to facilitate study of the parallel text alongside both the Textual Notes and the Commentary/ Glossary." A few other changes and improvements have been made, and editor Schmidt (Oxford U.) extends his hope and expectation that Langland scholars will relish this new edition of all four versions of the 14th-century text.
