On Walnut Hill ― The Evolution of a Garden

This is the story of a garden and the story of the family in their garden. Over 46 years gardeners A.C. and Penney Hubbard, with the help of New American Garden pioneer Kurt Bluemel, transformed a Maryland hillside into living sculpture. Narrative and archival photographs chronicle the story. Prose poems introduce seven seasonal sections by the award-winning landscape photographer to showcase one year in a garden listed in the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens.

Kathy Hudson has been a writer for 30 years. For decades she has written feature and garden articles for Baltimore Style magazine, The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Fishbowl, Chesapeake Life, and Chesapeake Home. Her bimonthly essays have appeared as “Hudson’s Corner” in The Baltimore Messenger since 1995. A graduate of Hollins College (now Hollins University), she lives in her childhood home in Baltimore, Maryland, where she tends the garden with her husband, the painter Greg Otto.
