This book examines hospitality in the traditional sense of the word: hospitality as the pan-human institution that organizes the interaction of guests and hosts. It is based on nine days that the author spent with Herr Klaus, an elderly innkeeper in Leipzig, eastern Germany. This book argues that practices of hospitality that accommodate hostility are more resilient than practices of hospitality that restrict hosts to expressing generosity and care. This work demonstrates that insights from one case can inform a large and complex social institution such as hospitality.
