Herrick (Oklahoma State U.) and Fisher (U. of South Alabama) examine how legislators maintain their own citizenship as they represent their constituents and their mutual or conflicting interests. They analyze the professionals, those whose careers have been primarily as elected officials, and those who can be called "citizen politicians," or those who came from the private sector without prior experience in public life, and ask which background makes for better representatives. Using the period from 1992-1998 as a testing ground, they find differences in ambitions and the resulting attitudes toward the people who elected them figure prominently in their willingness to selflessly serve.
