Fairfield (philosophy, Queen's U., Canada) explores the modern implications of the age-old tensions between what exactly of our lives belongs in the public sphere, and what we should keep, and expect others to keep, private. He notes the issue is increasingly important given the new technologies that have become as intrusive as they are useful to conducting both public and private lives, finding that the question is not so much what is public and what is private as whether the distinction is conceptually intelligible anymore. He explores the options presented by the past and the dilemmas posed by information saturation in the present, the intrusions of political philosophy in the bedroom beyond those already there traditionally, and the cogitation it will take to resolve the questions and the questions posed by the questions.
