Rejai (emeritus, political science, Miami U., Ohio) and Phillips (sociology, gerontology, and anthropology, Miami U.) present a companion work to their 1997 work Leaders and Leadership: An Appraisal of Theory and Research , in which they looked at concepts of leadership in the post World War II period. Here they trace the development of concepts of leadership through the lens of political theory and psychology from Plato to Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson. Separate chapters look at various philosophies takes on leadership, with treatments of natural law theory, Christianity, Machiavelli, social contract theory, Thomas Carlyle, Friedrich Nietzsche, Weberian sociology, Freud, and Erikson.
