Legitimating the European Union ― Aspirations, Inputs And Performance

A study in EU legitimacy from the perspective of EU citizens. It argues that legitimacy is empirical: "legitimacy only exists if peoplefeel that it does". The book points out that the EU is a unique and dynamic institution, hence legitimating factors are also evolutionary. The book shows that liberal democracy has not established EU legitimacy - hence it looks at new forms of input and performance to examine prospects for new forms of legitimating the EU.
