An important objective of the workshop that became this book was to help develop a policy-oriented research agenda for addressing the security needs of migrants and those impacted by migration in source and destination communities. After a pair of essays reviewing transnational trends of migration and population, the editors (both of the Institute for Future Studies, Sweden) present a section discussing impacts on source countries that includes papers on the economics of "brain drain;" remittances to labor source countries; migration, development, and conflict; and whether doctors and nurses should be treated differently in migration regimes. Migration management in destination countries is discussed as it relates to citizenship and in reference to legal and irregular migration for employment in Italy, France, and Sweden. Transnational and regional issues are also explored, including regional arrangements affecting Asian labor migration, cooperation and barriers to people and goods in Africa, Western hemispheric integration and migration, and the possibility of an international regime for mobility and security.
