Traditionally, traffic flow patterns have been modeled using steady-state nodes and linkages to represent real-world road and transportation systems. More recent advances in modeling have taken into account the effects of non-recurring events and interruptions to those traffic networks so as to make the models more accurate and robust models for precise planning. However, to date, there have been few books on transportation network modeling, and of those that are available, none really cover advanced level practices like calibration of an existing model. This book will meet that deficiency, and in addition provide new guidance for practitioners to develop, calibrate, and validate network models. After reviewing the concept of transportation networks, the book goes on to analyze demand and supply modes, traffic performance and assignment models…and to show how to develop real-time modeling systems, and calibration methods, and the all-important practice of model validation. The book will be beneficial to both students of transportation engineering and to practicing professionals.
