商品簡介
Lee examines the immediate effects and continuing legacy of the New Deal by focusing solely on the plight of South Dakota, a state hit hard by both the economy and Mother Nature throughout the 1930s. The author begins with an explanation of the reasons for the Great Depression such as out of control speculation on the stock market, high tariffs, and most importantly for South Dakota, plummeting wheat and crop prices. Drought then took hold of the state, which meant devastation for a great number of farms in just a few short years. The bulk of the text focuses on the politics and policies of the New Deal, discussing deals made by the politicians of the state as well as Roosevelt's works initiatives such as the WPA, CCC, among others. A number of illustrations showing people on the farm or at work are included. Of special note is an afterword, collecting quotes from South Dakotans who lived through the Depression, relating their memories of the time.
