Years before becoming Japanese Prime Minister, Miyazawa Kiichi served as the secretary to Ikeda Hayato while the latter was finance Minister and when he was Minister of International Trade and Industry during the late 1940 and early 1950s and was a first hand participant in political and economic talks between the United States and Japan during the transition from occupation to independence. First published in 1956, his now-translated memoir of those talks is unusual for a Japanese politician and sheds light on a crucial moment in US-Japanese relations.
