Key considerations and lessons learned from selected case projects are presented based on the author's extensive international experience of over 30 years and 1000 km of tunneling for civil, hydropower, and mining infrastructure, including some of the most recognized projects in the world to date.

Dean Brox has an undergraduate degree in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada (1985) and a Masters Degree in Engineering Rock Mechanics with Distinction from Imperial College, University of London, England (1990).?He is a registered Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia, the Professional Engineers of Ontario, and the Association of Professional Engineers of the Yukon. Dean started his career in the underground deep-level gold mining industry in South Africa learning and dealing with highly stressed ground and the daily occurrences of rockbursting. Dean also lived and worked for extended periods in Hong Kong and Switzerland involved with the design and construction of a variety of large and deep underground excavations associated with major transportation projects.
