This book traces the history of Civil War battlefield preservation from 1861 to 2015 through outright preservation at the federal, state, local, and private levels, as well as federal historic preservation policy and memory. It provides an overview of the preservation process of various generations and the people involved, with specific examples, emphasizing the highest level of preservation for each battlefield. It follows the entire cyclical process, from the earliest generation's private and state work, to large-scale federal efforts, and state and local government work, as well as private efforts today.
