Peter Schaffer was an English playwright and screenwriter, best known for Tony Award-winning works Equus (Plymouth/Helen Hayes Theatres) and Amadeus, which also received a Drama Award for Outstanding New Play (Broadhurst Theatre). Other Broadway works include Lettice and Lovage and Black Comedy/White Lies (Ethel Barrymore Theatre), The Royal Hunt of the Sun (ANTA Playhouse), The Private Ear and The Public Eye (Morosco Theatre), and Finger Five Exercise (Music Box Theatre).Shaffer himself adapted a number of his plays into screenplays—including Amadeus, for which he received Academy, Golden Globe, and LAFCA Awards for Best Screenplay. Other works include Equus, The Public Eye, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, The Private Ear, and Five Finger Exercise. Shaffer also wrote the screenplays for The Pad and How to Use It, and Balance of Terror. Shaffer is an American Theater Hall of Fame inductee, a CBE Award-winner, and a Knight Bachelor Honoree.
