The WHO Regional Office for Europe here presents a third handbook to complete the overview of health status in countries grouped by their relationship to the European Union. The first volume considered the 10 countries that joined in 2004, and the second volume the 12 that presented common borders with the enlarged Union after 2004. Covered here are the three Caucasus republics and five Central Asian countries that are too near to be neglected but too distant to catch the early trains. The same 10 questions are addressed in each article of each volume, and the data compared to cases relevant or familiar to Western Europeans. Among the questions are demographic essentials, what people suffer from, health risks, the public health sector, who pays for what, and reform of the health care system. In-country activities of the World Health Organization are also listed, as are sources of information. Tabbed pages make finding information about a particular country quick.
