This book discusses innovations and innovation processes for harnessing petroleum macromolecules. After a chapter introducing the world of petroleum and petroleum macromolecules, separate chapters are devoted to characterization, thermal conversion kinetics, phase behavior, and separation of petroleum macromolecules. Applications and case studies are included, in areas such as fouling mitigation, coking, visbreaking, and hydroconversion. Fouling mitigation is emphasized because of its potential for savings in energy, carbon dioxide emissions, and operating costs. There is also material on petroleum economics, petroleum processing technology, and the chemical engineering approach to research. A secondary purpose of the book is to provide a glimpse of how industrial research is conducted by creating knowledge for innovation, as opposed to the way basic research is conducted by creating knowledge for the sake of knowledge.
