The shifting relationships between reading and seeing inform the audience's interpretations of how text and image composed together on screen relate. Semiotics and Title Sequences develops a novel theory of interpretive modes that organize these interpretations, discussing them using detailed historical close readings of title designs drawn from the full historical range of film production and screen media, from classic films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919) to modern television series like Castle. These foundational ideas are then extended to composites of typography beyond the title sequence such as subtitles, intertitles, and narrative typography, establishing a foundational framework for the critique and discussion of motion graphics' use of text in design.
