The papers presented here were first heard at the eighth international conference on the evolution of language, held at Utrecht in April of 2010. Smith (University of Edinburgh) and his co-editors have arranged the over one hundred twenty papers and abstracts alphabetically by author. The topics vary from highly technical linguistic studies to thoughts on the possibility of Neanderthal language. Several papers look at nonhuman communication in other primates, birds and even whales. Some look at peculiarities in one language; others compare several. Language acquisition is addressed both in children with their first language and adults learning a second one. The creation of the Nicaraguan Sign language by deaf children is particularly charming. Authors are from many disciplines including linguistics, computer science, psychology, biology, mathematics, archaeology and engineering.
