Hydrostatic testing assesses pressure vessels, such as pipelines, for strength and leaks. It involves filling a vessel with liquid and pressurizing the vessel to a set test level. While an important procedure for industries, residual liquid from the test can cause issues with vessel corrosion, particularly microbial corrosion. This manual discusses how test liquid must be selected, corrosion by bacteria ought to be controlled, and the possibility of leakage can be eliminated. It does not teach how to conduct a hydrotest, but helps the reader evaluate the quality of a hydrotest already conducted in terms of use of oxygen scavenger, biocide testing, inhibitor addition, and water quality.
Dr. Reza Javaherdashti holds a double degree in Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering. He has more than 20 years of industrial and academic experience. In addition to more than 40 research papers and about the same number of root cause analysis reports, he has authored four books, including Corrosion and Materials in the Oil and Gas Industries (Taylor & Francis, 2013) and Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: An Engineering Insight (Springer-Verlag, 2008).
Farzaneh Akvan has a background in Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry. She has an MSc. degree and her interests are in corrosion management, chemicals management, and electrochemistry and its application in corrosion control. Selected as the Best Young Researcher in all Europe in 2010 for her research on cathodic disbondment, receiving an award from Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, she is currently working as a consultant to oil and gas industries as senior inspector and corrosion advisor and a lecturer on the management of chemicals used for water treatment and corrosion. She has several publications about corrosion management and the link between future studies and corrosion management. Ms. Akvan is a member of International Electrochemistry Society.
