Genocide and Crisis in Central Africa ─ Conflict Roots, Mass Violence, and Regional War

Scherrer, head of the independent Ethnic Conflict Research Project founded in 1987, examines the genesis of violence in the Central African intrastate conflicts of Rwanda, the Congo, and Burundi analytically and also as "part of a personal process of grieving." Viewing the state-sponsored massacres in Rwanda as the worst genocide since the Holocaust, he discusses its roots in European colonialism-racism, and four decades of post-colonial ideology in the region. CHRISTIAN P. SCHERRER is the head of the Ethnic Conflict Research Project, an independent research project founded in 1987. Dr. Scherrer conducted field research in four areas of violent intra-state conflict and worked for a number of international organizations, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. In this capacity he conducted genocide investigations in Rwanda's southern Butare province and elaborated a study on Justice-in-Transition and Conflict Prevention in Post-Genocide Rwanda.
