This book is a comprehensive introduction to Internet Infrastructure. It covers wired and wireless networks, the Internet (specifically the TCP/IP protocol), the domain name system (DNS), web servers and the HTTP/HTTPS protocols, web caches and various proxy server protocols, establishing IP addresses, and cloud computing. The book also includes forms of encryption technologies, securing networks and servers, network analysis tools, load balancing, mechanisms for redundancy, and more. Each concept chapter is followed by a case study chapter to illustrate the concepts presented. The case study chapters are set up so that readers can install servers and experiment with their configurations.
Richard Fox is a professor of computer science at Northern Kentucky University (NKU) who regularly teaches courses in both computer science (Artificial Intelligence, Computer Systems, Computer Architecture, Concepts of Programming Languages) and computer information technology (IT Fundamentals, Unix/Linux, Web Server Administration). Dr. Fox, who has been at NKU since 2001, is the current chair of NKU’s University Curriculum Committee. Prior to NKU, Dr. Fox taught for 9 years at the University of Texas – Pan American. He has received two Teaching Excellence awards, from the University of Texas – Pan American in 2000 and from Northern Kentucky University in 2012, and NKU’s University Service award in 2016.
Dr. Fox received a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Sciences from The Ohio State University in 1992. He also has an M.S. in Computer and Information Sciences from Ohio State (1988) and a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Missouri Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) from 1986. This is Dr. Fox’s third textbook (all three are available from CRC Press/Taylor and Francis). He is also author or co-author of over 50 peer reviewed research articles primarily in the area of Artificial Intelligence.
Richard Fox grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and now lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a big science fiction fan and progressive rock fan. As you will see in reading this text, his favorite composer is Frank Zappa.
Wei Hao is an associate professor of Computer Science at Northern Kentucky University (NKU). He came to NKU in August 2008 from Cisco Systems in San Jose, California, where he worked as a software engineer. He also worked for Motorola and Alcatel, where he co-invented a patent.
Wei has 38 peer-reviewed publications in scholarly journals and conference proceedings. His research interests include Web Technologies, Cloud Computing, and Mobile Computing. He won the Faculty Excellent Performance in Scholarly or Creative Activity Award from NKU in 2012. Dr. Hao teaches a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in computer science and computer information technology including Cloud Computing, Web Server Administration, Storage Administration, Administrative Scripting, Network Security, System Architecture, Computer Networks, Software Testing, Software Engineering, iPhone Programming and Advanced Programming Method.
Dr. Hao earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2007 with a specialization in Web Technologies.
