The Partition of Bengal in 1947 resulted in the creation of new states and the India-Bangladesh border. This book examines the lived experiences and perceptions of the people living across the India-Bangladesh border in the years following 1947. The author traces how the people living along this border have experienced and perceived this geographical unique area and complex citizenship status. Rather than seeing the people of the border as victims, the author give agency to the people who live and negotiate the border in their everyday lives—not through clear-cut organised movements but through their quotidian existences and rudimentary practices. The book looks at how, instead of being dwarfed by the overwhelming presence of the border, the people living along the India-Bangladesh border have learnt to use the border as an opportunity and as a weapon.
Based on detailed field research, this book brings a fresh approach to the study of this border. It will be of interest to researchers in the field of South Asian studies, citizenship, development, governance and border studies.
