Brad Smith was born and raised in southern Ontario. He has worked as a farmer, signalman, insulator, truck driver, bartender, schoolteacher, maintenance mechanic, roofer, and carpenter. His novel, ONE-EYED JACKS, was nominated for the Dashiell Hammett Prize. His novels include ONE-EYED JACKS, ALL HAT (a 2007 major motion picture staring Keith Carradine), BUSTED FLISH, BIG MAN COMING DOWN THE ROAD, READ MEANS RUN, CROW'S LANDING, SHOOT THE DOG, ROUGH JUSTICE and BIG MAN COMING DOWN THE ROAD.
