Responsible Management Education ― Some Voices from Asia

Business Schools in Asia are gradually opening up to the idea of teaching responsible management. While there is acknowledgement of the need to teach responsible management, there are few books/ articles to help teachers teach it. Books illustrating teaching in Western contexts are not easily applied to the Asian context. Therefore there is need to develop a book that provides Asian teachers with contextually appropriate approaches. Responsible management is defined here as the willingness of firms to incorporate social and environmental considerations into their decision-making and to be accountable for the impact of their business decisions/ activities on society & the environment. A book illustrating different approaches to teaching responsible management in the Asian context could be an important step towards rapidly diffusing it across various B-Schools in Asia. The topic of responsible management appears to be the need of the hour, judging from the many high profile scandals. In many instances, especially in respect to the access to scarce natural resources like land/ water, companies have compromised the interests of the community & the environment. As a result, the world is experiencing rapid global warming and higher social inequalities. Higher inequalities in turn impact demand levels across industries.
