本標準由18章組成，其主要內容包括總則，經濟運量與運輸組織圖形符號，線路圖形符號，軌道圖形符號，地質圖形符號，路基、橋涵和隧道圖形符號，站場圖形符號，機務、車輛、綜合檢測與維修及動車組設備圖形符號，通信、信息圖形符號，信號圖形符號，防災安全監控圖形符號，電力圖形符號，電氣化圖形符號，給水排水圖形符號，房屋建築圖形符號，環境保護圖形符號，施工組織圖形符號，施工現場標誌，另有10個附錄。本標準的主要修訂內容如下：1．標準名稱修改為《鐵路工程圖形符號標準》。2．增加了高速鐵路、數字移動通信GSM-R等有關的圖形符號。3．增加了“軌道圖形符號”章節，補充了無縫線路等體現軌道專業要求的圖形符號。4．增加了“電力圖形符號”、“房屋建築圖形符號”、“環境保護圖形符號”章節，重點補充與鐵路設計相關的圖形符號。5．補充了經濟運量有關內容。6．補充了地質專業未作規定的圖形符號。7．原“機務設備和車輛設備”章節名稱改為“機務、車輛、綜合檢測與維修及動車組設備圖形符號”，並補充動車組設備、綜合檢測與維修的有關圖形符號。8．將“通信圖形符號”章節改為“通信、信息圖形符號”，並增加信息有關內容。9．納入“施工現場標誌”有關內容。10.取消了涉及“蒸汽機車”的有關圖形符號。
