The first thing that struck visitors when they arrived at the inconspicuous warehouse in Geneva, Switzerland, where Julio Mario Santo Domingo kept the bulk of his library, was the sheer scale of it. Exploring the innumerable influences of mind-enhancing drugs on art, science, and politics over the centuries, Santo Domingo’s collection—now housed at Harvard University and on exhibition through December 16, 2017—is a treasure trove of rare manuscripts, pulp fiction, academic analysis and historic objects. It contains work by diverse figures including Andy Warhol, Timothy Leary, Sigmund Freud, the Marquis de Sade, Charles Baudelaire, Allen Ginsberg, the Rolling Stones, Aleister Crowley, and many more.
