1752 to 1776. Benthams life in the mid-1790s was dominated by the panopticon, both as a prison and as a network of workhouses for the indigent. The letters in this volume document in excruciating detail Benthams attempt to build a panopticon prison in London, and the opposition he faced from local aristocratic landowners. In his domestic life, in 1796 Samuel Bentham was appointed as Inspector-General of Naval Works and married Mary Sophia Fordyce.
作者簡介
Jeremy Bentham (1748–1832) was an English philosopher, jurist, and social reformer who founded modern utilitarianism. Timothy L. S. Sprigge (1932–2007) was a? philosopher who was was professor of logic and metaphysics at the University of Edinburgh.
