Pika, Maltese, and Rudalevige offer a brief, concise supplement to their book The Politics of the Presidency. Understanding a New Presidency in the Age of Trump is an overview for students of American politics of Trump’s first year at the helm of the ship of state. Six sections cover the transition, inauguration, the first hundred and second hundred days plus foreign policy, and finish with conclusions and speculations regarding the future. There are 15 discussion questions at the end. Section I recounts the transition between election and inauguration. Section II focuses on inauguration day events. Section III assesses Trump’s first hundred days, his role in the legislative process, executive management, and communication with the public. Section IV looks at Trump’s growing distractions and legislature failure, and how he turned away from his previous isolationist stance and put his attention abroad. Section V examines continuity and change in the administration and asks if there is a Trump doctrine emerging. Section VI reflects on challenges posed by his presidency to Madison’s system of shared but competing government powers—the checks and balances.
