On December 6, 1917, two tramp steamers, the Mont-Blanc and the Imo, collided in wartime Halifax Harbour, creating what became the largest man-made explosion of its time. More than 2000 people died, 9,000 were injured, 6,000 people were left homeless and an additional 19,000 were left without adequate shelter. In a combination of words and images (many never seen before), John Boileau delivers a breathtaking account of the magnitude of this event.
作者簡介
John Boileau served in the Canadian Army for 37 years, retiring as a colonel in 1999. During his army career, he was stationed across Canada and in the United States, Great Britain, Germany and Cyprus, in various command, staff and training appointments. He is a graduate of the University of New Brunswick, the United States Army Armour Officer Advanced Course, the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College, the British Army Staff College and the British Royal College of Defence Studies. He is currently Honorary Colonel of The Halifax Rifles (RCAC). In retirement, John commenced a second career as a writer, and has authored a dozen books of historical non-fiction, as well as hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles, book reviews and opinion pieces. His most recent book was Too Young to Die: Canada’s Boy Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen in the Second World War, released in 2016 and co-authored with Dan Black. It is a companion volume to their 2013 Old Enough to Fight: Canada’s Boy Soldiers in the First World War. John is an active director and member of several volunteer organizations, often speaks to various groups on historical subjects and is a frequent commentator on historical and military matters on radio and television. In 2012, John received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to the history and heritage of Nova Scotia. He lives near Halifax.
