Devil Barnett has a special talent for eliminating special problems, a talent he's put to work as a CIA wet-ops anent for fifteen years. But when his father is killed at this 125th St. bar, the Be-Bop Tavern, Devil leaves "the Company" to come home and run the Be-Bop. He finds a Harlem greatly changed from his former boyhood home, overrun with drugs, gangs, and self-serving politicians; but also welcoming and familiar, full of the strong wills, stern codes, and the big hearts he remembers.
He might think he can get away with being just a simple tavern owner back in the old neighborhood, but when trouble comes along in the form of a murdered Japanese diplomat and a missing call girl, Devil Barnett answers. The cops, the Harlem political machine, and Korean gangster bosses are all pressuring Devil to find out who killed the man and shot up a Harlem brothel, but Devil doesn't work for anyone anymore unless he wants to, and he doesn't' like being pressured.
