Deutscher examines theories about an impending collapse of the world economy due to the depletion of natural resources, the reasons the COP 21 Agreement recommended massive reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and methods for calculating atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration over a time scale. A thermodynamic approach to modeling exchanges among the atmosphere, emerged lands, and oceans evaluates the maximum level of emissions compatible with maintaining the global balance of the biosphere, based on a law of thermodynamics according to which increases of entropy due to these emissions may be offset by an external energy supply.
