In their preface Graedel (School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, New Haven, Connecticut) and Howard-Grenville (management, Boston University) describe the Yale University course out of which this text grew: upper-level undergraduates or beginning graduate students in engineering or applied science visit and tour industrial facilities from receiving dock, through the processes of manufacturing and quality control, ending at the shipping dock (and then, of course, the students write reports). Introductory coverage of the issues, tools, and approaches for industrial environmental management is followed by analysis of operations, resources, concerns, and prospects in each of 19 sectors, among them: fossil fuel extraction, power generation, agriculture, food processing, textiles, sand and glass, plastic products, forest products and printing, and recycling.
