Etel Adnan is the internationally admired writer and visual artist, who was born in Lebanon in 1925, and settled in California for several decades. She currently resides in Paris. In addition to more than fifteen volumes of writings and her work as a cultural journalist, her visual art was seen in dOCUMENTA 13 and the Whitney Biennial in 2014. Her books include To look at the sea is to become what one is, Master of the Eclipse, Sea and Fog, and The Arab Apocalypse. Her novel Sitt Marie-Rose is considered an anti-war classic and has been translated into numerous languages. Her writings have been made into operas, radio plays, theatre, and song cycles. London’s Serpentine Gallery celebrated her work in a recent major exhibit. In France, Adnan has been awarded l'Ordre de Chevalier des Arts et Lettres. In April 2018 MassMoCA will open an exhibit on her poetry and painting.
