How is Christ present in the Eucharist? What is the nature of the Eucharistic sacrifice? To reformers like Luther, transubstantiation was sacrilege, and the Eucharist was not a "good work" applied by the priesthood to atone for the sins of the living and the dead. Other reformers had ideas that differed significantly, and the nature of the sacrament remained a clear dividing point between members of the reform movement and the reform movement and the Roman Catholic Church. When Bucer attempted to reconcile the disparate elements, including moderate Catholics, it appeared some degree of rapprochement was likely. However, arguments only a short time later sufficed to keep all sides apart, a situation still in debate today. Thompson (church history, U. of Aberdeen) details the issues and examines how patristic testimony was used by all sides to support the cause of each. He focuses particularly on the scholarship of Bucer as he prepared for the colloquies that seemed promising but eventually failed to produce resolution or reconciliation.
