本書是按照高職高專院校機械工程類專業英語教學大綱所編寫。首先，編者在多年教學實踐經驗的基礎上，力求按專業培養的寬口徑，使專業英語教材具有良好的通用性；其次，根據高職高專教育的應用性特徵，使專業英語具有較強的實用性和針對性。此書為修訂本第三版。此書自2009年9月出版以來，一直被很多高校選為教材。可作為高職高專機械設計與製造類、機電控制等專業的教材，也可供工商管理專業、經濟類專業和英語專業學生、技術人員學習參考。建議教師根據各專業的學生情況，可不受教材編排順序的限制，進行適當刪選。對老師在授課中沒有選入的單元，學生可以根據自己的興趣或需要自學其中的部分內容，以拓寬專業英語的知識面。
