On a cold December day in 1906, a small group of Connecticut students decided to buck tradition and count the birds they saw that day rather than shoot them. That group would soon establish the New Haven Bird Club, one of the earliest bird clubs in the United States, dedicated to community education about birds, preservation of bird habitat, and the observation of birds in the wild. The nineteen pieces in this anthology, written by current members and supporters, cover club history, notable members, key programs, personal stories, and members' impact on birding, locally and throughout the United States. While capturing a piece of Connecticut's birding history, the book will also encourage readers to consider - or continue - birding in the New Haven area, a superb place to view and interact with both birds and bird lovers.
